Inteligência artificial e sustentabilidade: benefícios na gestão racional de recursos hídricos e prejuízos no alto consumo energético

Este artigo examina o papel da inteligência artificial na consecução da Agenda 2030 das Nações Unidas para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, com foco no Objetivo de Desenvolvimento Sustentável 9 (ODS 9 — Indústria, Inovação e Infraestrutura). Na primeira seção, situa-se o conceito de sustentabilidade à luz dos 17 ODS e das 169 metas correlacionadas, demonstrando como a IA opera como habilitadora transversal do desenvolvimento sustentável. Na segunda seção, estuda-se o caso da Bacia Hidrográfica do Segura, no sudeste da Espanha, em que soluções integradas de IA, aprendizado de máquina e IA generativa vêm sendo aplicadas ao monitoramento ambiental e à tomada de decisão em gestão integrada de recursos hídricos escassos. Na terceira seção, investiga-se o "calcanhar de aquiles" da IA para a sustentabilidade, a saber, o consumo energético massivo dos data centers que sustentam o treinamento e a operação de modelos cada vez mais poderosos. Discutem-se quatro famílias arquiteturais capazes de reduzir tal impacto — Green AI, Edge AI, Federated Learning e o uso da própria IA para otimizar o consumo dos data centers — e conclui-se que a IA somente acelerará a implementação da Agenda 2030 na medida em que decisões arquitetônicas, regulatórias e éticas orientem sua expansão em bases ambientalmente responsáveis.
